Ambulatory clinic

Check out the video below to learn more about the ambulatory continuity clinic experience!

The outpatient cardiology clinic experience takes place at LA General/USC Medical Center. Fellows are assigned to one half-day continuity clinic per week throughout the academic year which takes place every Monday or Wednesday afternoon. At the beginning of the academic year, new first-year fellows will inherit a patient panel from one of the recently graduated general cardiology fellows. Throughout the fellowship, fellows will build their patient panel, providing longitudinal care over the course of three years.

In the ambulatory setting, fellows will hone skills in new consultation, appropriate referral for cardiac diagnostics, preventative cardiology, management of chronic cardiac disease, and triage of acutely decompensated cardiac conditions. The first Monday clinic of each month is our “Cardiac Electrophysiology and Adult Congenital Cardiology Clinic”. During these clinics, our Adult Congenital Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology faculty will be present and available to staff these complex cases.

In accordance with ACGME expectations, first-year fellows will be assigned 6 patients, second-year fellows will be assigned 7 patients and third-year fellows will be assigned 8 patients - all fellows will have 1 overbook slot per clinic. Ambulatory clinics are supervised by 2-3 rotating attending faculty. Fellows will not be assigned to their regular continuity clinics when rotating through either the LA General/USC cardiac intensive care unit (CCU) service or the Keck heart failure service, in an effort to focus on the inpatient care for critically ill ICU patients. Additionally, fellows will not be assigned to their regular continuity clinics on a post-call day, should this occur.
